Elliot Nelson

Director, Downtown Tulsa Partnership; founder and CEO, McNellie’s Group

A restaurateur and development partner connects downtown hospitality, property projects and nonprofit governance.

Elliot Nelson is a Downtown Tulsa Partnership director and the founder and CEO of McNellie’s Group. His career links the 2004 opening of a downtown pub with broader restaurant ventures, the Santa Fe Square development and civic planning. His former DTP chairmanship and current directorship are distinct roles.

A downtown director, with collective responsibilities

Elliot Nelson serves on Downtown Tulsa Partnership’s governing board, which is responsible for organizational governance and fiscal oversight. The current roster identifies his affiliation as McNellie’s Group and names Chip Gaberino as chair. Nelson’s own chairmanship is historical: the partnership introduced him in that role in September 2023. A director participates in collective nonprofit governance; this listing does not give him authority to enact city ordinances, approve a municipal budget or direct city departments. The partnership separately identifies a Tulsa Stadium Improvement District advisory committee, whose responsibilities should not be inferred from governing-board membership.

Education and the first pub

The Tulsa Regional Chamber’s 2023 account of his TYPROS Legacy Award says Nelson studied at the University of Notre Dame, spent time in Ireland as a student and returned to Tulsa after graduating. It connects that experience of Dublin pubs with his decision to create a pub at home. Public Radio Tulsa dates the opening of McNellie’s Pub to 2004. Those sources establish the educational and business sequence without supplying a graduation year. The original pub’s opening should also be distinguished from the later expansion and corporate organization of McNellie’s Group.

Where the nonprofit and the business meet

In March 2026, DTP announced that its Downtown Midweek Market would move to Santa Fe Square Plaza in partnership with McNellie’s Group. The announcement explicitly anticipated additional customers for surrounding restaurants and retailers. This provides a concrete example of the overlap between a director’s business setting and the nonprofit’s downtown programming. It records an announced collaboration and intended benefits, without disclosing a payment amount, contract terms or a board vote. It therefore cannot establish a financial transfer to Nelson or how he participated in any approval or recusal.

Hospitality and redevelopment

DTP identified Nelson as McNellie’s Group’s founder and CEO in its March 2026 market announcement. The company’s current brand list spans pub, diner and other restaurant concepts, including Dilly Diner, Elgin Park and Yokozuna. His development work extends beyond restaurant operation. Carpathia Development’s undated team biography lists him as a principal and describes rehabilitation work across residential, retail, office and restaurant properties. Because that page carries no effective date, it establishes a documented company association rather than a verified start date or uninterrupted current tenure. None of these descriptions establishes his ownership percentage in every restaurant or property.

Santa Fe Square: a development partnership

Public Radio Tulsa’s July 2021 report identifies Nelson as a development partner in Santa Fe Square, across from the original pub. It describes construction on land previously used for surface parking, with plans combining offices, apartments, retail and a public plaza. Hall Estill’s planned office tenancy provided a connection between the development and an established professional-services firm. The report documents a partnership and a project at the construction stage; it does not establish Nelson’s sole ownership or a final accounting of costs, subsidies or returns. His role is best understood as participation in a multi-party development.

Earlier civic roles and advocacy

DTP’s September 2023 biography describes Nelson as a past chair of the City of Tulsa’s Economic Development Commission, the Downtown Coordinating Council and the Oklahoma Restaurant Association. These are dated historical descriptions, not assertions that he holds those offices today. In the same interview, Nelson recalled attending meetings, speaking and campaigning for Vision 2025 because he favored investment in downtown. That is his account of his political involvement. Separately, the city’s Arena District Master Plan project roster identifies him as a developer participant, documenting access to a planning process without establishing authority to adopt its recommendations.

The nonprofit compensation record

DTP’s Form 990 for July 1, 2024–June 30, 2025, filed May 13, 2026, lists Elliot Nelson as chairman. Part VII Section A, row 1 reports $0 in columns D, E and F: organizational reportable compensation, related-organization reportable compensation and estimated other compensation. The reportable-compensation columns use calendar 2024. These amounts concern nonprofit compensation and say nothing about his total business earnings, personal income or net worth. The historical title in the return does not supersede the current board roster.

Professional and civic recognition

The James Beard Foundation named Nelson a 2025 Outstanding Restaurateur semifinalist for his work with McNellie’s Group. A semifinalist designation is a particular stage of the awards process, not an award victory. Tulsa Flyer reporting places him among the Tulsa Hall of Fame inductees honored on October 5, 2026. Together with the 2023 TYPROS recognition, these distinctions show how his work has been recognized by culinary and local civic institutions; they do not independently validate every claim about its economic impact.

Interpretation

How the connections fit together

Nelson’s documented influence operates through several distinct positions: leading hospitality businesses, participating in property development, serving in nonprofit governance and contributing to civic planning. Santa Fe Square and the market partnership show how these activities can intersect in one place. Their proximity makes disclosure and the allocation of decision-making responsibility relevant questions. The affiliations alone do not establish control of public decisions, coordinated political action or misconduct.
