Chip Gaberino

Chair, Downtown Tulsa Partnership; CEO, Topeca Coffee Roasters

A coffee and hospitality entrepreneur connects downtown business interests with nonprofit governance.

Chip Gaberino, also identified as John Gaberino, chairs Downtown Tulsa Partnership and leads Topeca Coffee Roasters. His documented career links Salvadoran coffee production, Tulsa hospitality businesses and civic forums. The record includes both the growth of those ventures and the disruption caused by the 2023 fire at Lowood and Hodges Bend.

What the downtown chair can influence

Chip Gaberino chairs Downtown Tulsa Partnership, whose current roster identifies his business affiliation as Topeca Coffee. The partnership describes its governing board’s responsibilities as organizational governance and fiscal oversight. Its separate Tulsa Stadium Improvement District advisory committee monitors enhanced district services. Chairing the partnership does not establish membership of that separate committee or confer the powers of a city councilor. The organization’s August 2026 announcement of Kristina Scott as president and CEO illustrates the board’s executive-appointment role while distinguishing board leadership from daily management. It does not record how individual directors voted.

From information technology to coffee

A November 2023 introduction to Gaberino’s Keyrenter podcast interview says he earned a bachelor of science in information technology at Loyola University in New Orleans, then worked with Unilever in El Salvador and as an IT developer at Mercury International Technology after returning to the United States. These details remain attributed to the interview biography; it supplies no graduation or employment dates. In a separate 2023 interview published by the downtown partnership, Margarita Gaberino dated their move to Tulsa to 2000, the Tulsa roasting operation to 2005 and their first cafe to 2007. These milestones describe stages of the business rather than a single, unambiguous incorporation date.

The 2023 fire and its documented consequences

A September 23, 2023 fire damaged Lowood and Hodges Bend and displaced residents above the restaurants. KJRH interviewed Gaberino and Bush as co-owners about the event and community support. The Collegian subsequently reported their statement that the businesses remained closed and that they were helping displaced employees find work. These reports document a major interruption to the businesses. The preliminary explanation of the fire’s origin was not a final determination of liability. Plans to rebuild in the contemporary coverage do not establish a later reopening or the final disposition of insurance or legal claims.

A supply chain built around family coffee production

Topeca’s company history describes a response to the 2001 coffee-market crisis: connect Salvadoran growing and processing operations more directly to roasting and retail customers. The Journal Record’s April 2008 report independently identified Margarita as a Topeca co-owner and John as her husband, and described his investment with her brother in the family’s coffee operation. Their relationship matters here because both had documented business roles. The company’s claims about sustainability and fair producer prices describe its stated approach, not an independent labor or environmental audit. The Tulsa Regional Chamber identified John “Chip” Gaberino as Topeca’s CEO in September 2026.

Partnerships across coffee, restaurants and property

Oklahoma Restaurateur’s Spring 2023 profile described Gaberino as CEO of GB Provisions, encompassing food-and-beverage and real-estate businesses, and identified him as an Oklahoma Restaurant Association director. It emphasized that the individual businesses had different ownership arrangements. That historical account therefore does not establish identical ownership or a single legal entity across every brand. The magazine identified Noah Bush as his restaurant and bar partner. Daily Coffee News had reported their plans for Hodges Bend in November 2012, describing a concept combining coffee, wine and cocktails. Together the sources show how coffee production connected to hospitality ventures without supplying ownership percentages.

What the nonprofit return discloses

Downtown Tulsa Partnership’s Form 990 for July 1, 2024–June 30, 2025, filed May 13, 2026, lists John Gaberino as vice chair. Part VII Section A reports $0 in each of its organizational, related-organization and other-compensation columns for him. The reportable-compensation columns use calendar 2024, which ends within that fiscal year. This disclosure concerns his nonprofit role; it does not establish his business earnings, personal income or net worth. The current board roster supersedes the historical vice-chair title for describing his role today.

A public-facing role in downtown development

The partnership’s May 2025 recap describes Gaberino and Elliot Nelson answering downtown residents’ questions at an April 29 meeting. The record demonstrates participation in a public discussion of development; it is not a record of an adopted municipal policy. In September 2026, the regional chamber also named Gaberino among business leaders participating in TYPROS All Access. These activities place him in settings where business experience is shared with residents and emerging professionals, alongside the formal responsibility of governing the downtown nonprofit.

Interpretation

The institutional connection

Gaberino’s businesses depend on downtown commercial life, while his board role helps oversee an organization that promotes and services that district. That overlap makes the distinction between private business interests and collective nonprofit decisions important. The documented affiliations explain institutional access and responsibility; they alone do not demonstrate preferential treatment, coordination among businesses or misconduct.
