Renee McKenney

Tourism executive; listed Tulsa Route 66 commissioner

A destination-industry executive connecting regional visitor promotion with Tulsa’s historic corridor and centennial events.

Renee McKenney leads Tulsa Regional Tourism, a division of the Tulsa Regional Chamber, and is listed on the Tulsa Route 66 Commission. Her executive work and advisory public seat have distinct powers and accountability.

A commission seat with a dated term

The City of Tulsa lists Renee McKenney in seat 3 of the Tulsa Route 66 Commission. Its roster gives July 1, 2026, as her term end, while specifying that members remain until successors are appointed and qualified. This supports describing her as the listed commissioner under that holdover provision; it does not establish a new appointment or term. The mayor appoints members and the Council confirms them. The 19-member commission advises those officials on revitalization, tourism, marketing and education along the historic corridor. Her seat provides a voice in collective recommendations, rather than independent authority over City spending, zoning or street construction.

A career in visitor experience

A Dallas native, McKenney is identified in her Sports ETA biography as a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin’s Moody communications school. That biography describes an early cruise-industry job and later work with Southwest Airlines and Disney’s parks and resorts business. It supplies no graduation year or complete chronology. Meetings Today’s July 2022 hiring report also names Sunseeker Resorts, Allegiant and HelmsBriscoe among her previous employers. Before Tulsa, she served as chief experience officer at VisitDallas. The range of those jobs connects her career to both the operators who serve travelers and the destination organizations that compete to attract them.

Excluded drivers and a refund commitment

The event also generated substantial complaints. The Tulsa Flyer reported that credentialed drivers were stranded at the staging area and unable to enter the parade. Organizers said they closed participation to protect the record attempt from excessive gaps, an explanation also reported by KJRH. On June 1, the commission and tourism organization announced refunds of base registration fees for all registered drivers, expanding an earlier approach focused on those excluded. Checks were to be mailed by the end of June. This profile establishes the announcement, not completed payment to every driver. The coverage documents an operational dispute involving institutions McKenney served; it does not establish that she personally made each traffic or entry decision.

Leading a regional tourism operation

McKenney is president of Tulsa Regional Tourism and senior vice president of regional tourism for the Tulsa Regional Chamber. The Chamber’s 2022 report dates her start in both roles to August 8 that year; the current tourism staff page continues to identify her as president. The division brings together Visit Tulsa, the convention and visitors bureau, the Tulsa Sports Commission and the Tulsa Office of Film, Music, Arts & Culture. Its work encompasses destination promotion, attracting meetings and sporting events, and supporting film and cultural activity. These executive responsibilities place her in a different institutional setting from the municipal commission: she leads a Chamber operation whose work depends on relationships with venues, hospitality businesses and public partners.

How she came to Tulsa

The Chamber selected McKenney after a search conducted with executive recruiting firm SearchWide Global and a strategic hiring committee. The July 2022 trade report described a veteran of meetings, sports events, hotels, resorts, airlines, cruises and theme parks. Her selection was an executive hiring decision, separate from appointment to the City commission. That distinction matters when assessing accountability: the tourism presidency involves managing an institutional team and its programs; the public commission seat involves participation in an advisory body with a mayoral and Council appointment process. Neither role alone establishes control of the other institution.

Industry and Route 66 connections

The City’s Route 66 business guide identifies McKenney as marketing chair, connecting the commission’s work with tourism promotion and centennial planning. That is a documented guide designation, without a verified current chair-term end. A separate national connection appears in the U.S. Travel Association’s January 21, 2025, roster: it lists her as a member of its Board of Delegates representing VisitTulsa. The document does not mark her as an Executive Board member. Her Sports ETA biography also reports previous service as president of the Professional Convention Management Association’s Gulf States chapter. These affiliations explain access to an industry network; they do not establish common ownership or coordinated decisions among its members.

A record-setting centennial event

McKenney helped publicly present the 2026 Capital Cruise as a Route 66 centennial attraction, describing plans for business participation and celebration zones before the event. On May 30, Tulsa achieved a Guinness record with an officially counted 3,596 classic cars. The Tulsa Flyer reported the adjudicated total after the parade, distinguishing it from the larger registration pool. For a destination organization, the event joined promotion of a historic corridor with a highly visible visitor experience. The record establishes the event’s measured achievement; it does not by itself establish economic impact or that every registrant was able to participate.

Interpretation

Where her influence sits

McKenney’s documented influence rests on connecting destination marketing, event development and the Route 66 corridor. Her executive role gives her an organizational platform; the commission gives her a place in public advisory discussions; professional associations connect that local work to a wider tourism industry. Capital Cruise illustrates both the visibility that such partnerships can generate and the accountability that follows when visitors’ experiences fall short. This is an interpretation of the roles and reported event record, not a claim that McKenney controls the City, participating businesses or independent cultural institutions.
